Extrusion is a technique that belongs to the standard repertoire of production processes in the areas of mould, model and prototype construction in different sectors such as shipbuilding and automotive engineering.
Extrusion involves applying multi-component synthetic resins or other pastes to a supporting surface using a dosing or mixing plant. For example, this could be the surface of a car model made of polystyrene or the wooden construction of a ship’s hull.
In principle, all extrusion procedures can be carried out manually. However, with HSM-MODAL® the customer can attain significant advantages in many extrusion areas that are reflected in lower production costs and higher quality.
HSM-MODAL® enables the customer to apply pastes onto surfaces with an even thickness. Thus, no valuable material is wasted. Additionally, automatic application using HSM-MODAL® prevents air from being trapped between the lines of paste. During reworking these pockets of trapped air can lead i.e. to the appearance of holes or cracks in the model or mould surface.
Especially with regard to large and long surfaces or surfaces that are difficult to reach due to height, the advantage of HSM-MODAL® in comparison to manual pasting quickly becomes apparent through the attainment of higher quality with similar or, as a rule, shorter extrusion times. Even very long objects that need to be coated such as long hulls for high-class yachts or catamarans are no problem for HSM-MODAL® as it can be extended, also at a later stage, up to 150 m lengthwise.
